Experience and Philosophy

After graduating from Latrobe University in Melbourne as a Physiotherapist in 1993, I launched my career working in the public health sector in the acute hospital setting. I soon felt myself drawn to rehabilitation and later Community Health. I have worked in a number of settings within Australia and overseas in the UK and also as a Volunteer Home-Based Physiotherapist trainer in Bangladesh.

I have developed an interest in working with adult clients with a disability, chronic conditions and/or pain or requiring rehabilitation. I utilise a client-centred goal orientated approach with an emphasis on building capacity and empowering clients to use self-management tools to maximise outcomes .

I have extensive experience facilitating group programs including exercise classes, Tai Chi, Chair and Gentle Yoga, Hydrotherapy, Meditation and Pain Management. After completing Yoga and Meditation teacher training in more recent years , I decided to launch Embrace Holistic Physio Yoga & Meditation in 2022.  I am passionate about combining all my knowledge and skills to work with a Mind-Body approach to health and wellbeing.

Physiotherapy

My Physiotherapy Service in Sunbury and surrounding suburbs supports clients and their families and carers to maximise independence and quality of life.

Assessment and Physiotherapy Management is tailored to the needs and goals of the client, a collaborative approach utilising a range of modalities.

Holistic Physio uses a Biopsychosocial Model of Health . It recognizes the connection between the physical, mental and emotional  aspects of ourselves, seeing the person as a 'whole'.

 Intervention may include :

  • Assessments and Recommendations

  • Transfer & Mobility training, gait aid assessments and prescription

  • Falls prevention

  • Home and gym exercise programs to improve or maintain strength, joint range of movement, flexibility, balance and endurance

  • Management of chronic conditions and disability, with an emphasis on education and self-management strategies

  • Rehabilitation post surgery, hospitalisation or illness

  • Relaxation strategies and lifestyle changes to minimise stress and manage chronic pain

Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Physiotherapy)

Hydrotherapy also known as ‘Aquatic Physiotherapy’ utilises the warmth of the water, buoyancy, and other properties to help reduce pain, promote relaxation, improve joint range of movement, flexibility, balance, and muscle strength.

It is particularly beneficial for conditions such as Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and other conditions where pain and limited weight-bearing can hinder the ability to exercise comfortably on land.

Yoga is also adaptable to practice in the water. (Aqua Yoga)

You do not need to be a ‘swimmer’ to benefit from hydrotherapy, but you do need to feel comfortable in an aquatic environment. I am in the pool , so can support clients to build confidence  and maximise the benefits of exercising in the water with an individualised program.

Yoga, Qigong and Meditation

I am passionate about making Yoga accessible to EVERYBODY . Yoga is so much more than the physical poses (asanas).

Classes offer an opportunity to come together in a shared safe space, connect, build community and a sense of belonging.

The word ‘Yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, meaning Union. It is both a philosophy and a state of mind. Union of mind, body, spirit and beyond.

Patanjali , an Indian sage, was the first to provide a written systematic presentation of Yoga about 2500 years ago, in the Yoga Sutras. He describes the 8 limbs of Yoga that includes ethics, postures , pranayama (breathing practices), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana).

In the 1st chapter of the Yoga sutras Patanjali describes Yoga as “chitta vritti nirodahah” stilling the fluctuations of the mind.

Qigong compliments Yoga so well, as a nurturing therapeutic movement and stillness practice, part of Oriental Medicine. I am continuing my studies and look forward to sharing more of this wonderful modality.

All my classes are gentle and invite students to develop self awareness  and compassion in their practice. Chair Yoga is wonderful for those that are not comfortable getting on and off the floor. My Mindful Movement and Meditation Class is a mixed class with both floor and chair based options.  We also explore some Qigong Forms. All classes include breathing, relaxation and meditation practices.

If you prefer, I am also available to work with individuals.

Yoga, Qigong and stand alone meditation practices are now widely researched and have a vast array of benefits for our physical, mental , emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing.
